RugRug embodies the design philosophy of ‘Phenomenal Space’, where meaning is created through interaction and experience. Drawing inspiration from the Rubik’s Cube, its concept of fragmentation and modularity emphasises breaking things down into smaller, fragmented parts. In the case of RugRug, this idea manifests through its modular nature, where the rug can be seen as a collection of individual pieces (the strips) into a single cohesive item. This challenges the conventional concept of a singular rug and mirrors the idea of deconstruction—breaking down a traditional object into smaller, independent units that can be rearranged in multiple ways. This encourages users to rearrange the six woven strips, allowing for personalised configurations that reflect the fragmented and evolving nature of life.

The abstract imagery woven into RugRug's “Doggos” theme is an example of simple yet powerful memories of joy, capturing dynamic scenes of my three dogs playing. These cherished moments of joy bring value to the end of a tiring, stressful day. As users interact with the rug, these fragments of memory are revealed, symbolising how life is composed of small, meaningful experiences.

Sustainability is a key element in RugRug’s creation. In contrast to many products designed to be replaced frequently, contributing to a "disposable culture," RugRug is hand-woven using leftover yarns from high-quality rug production. This reflects a commitment to reducing waste and creating value from excess materials. By transforming these remnants into something both functional and aesthetically striking, RugRug challenges the notion of constant production and highlights the potential to create with what already exists.

This unique combination of interactive designemotional resonance, and sustainable craftsmanship positions RugRug as an innovative piece that merges creativity, personal significance, and environmental responsibility. By transforming intangible memories and fleeting moments into a tangible object of comfort, RugRug offers not just a functional rug, but a meaningful experience—bridging the gap between the personal and the fragments of life, and inviting users to discover connections through design.
